Tampere Jazz Happening takes place from Thursday to Sunday

The Tampere Jazz Happening begins on Thursday, 31st October. The opening concert of the festival is free of charge for the audiences and includes performances by three exquisite French ensembles: Melusine, Three Days of Forest, and House of Echo.

Starting on Friday, all three venues of the Tullikamari plaza – Pakkahuone, Klubi, and Telakka – will be filled with some of the most interesting musicians in modern jazz. Friday evening’s concert at Pakkahuone opens with the award ceremonies of the Yrjö Award, the most prestigious recognition given to jazz musicians in Finland. The evening will continue with a performance by the grand old lady of free jazz, Joëlle Léandre, and her tentet. Later on, the audiences will be treated with performances by Norwegian Susanna & the Brotherhood of Our Lady, as well as Cross Currents Trio feat. Dave Holland, Zakir Hussain & Chris Potter, consisting of some of the most iconic international jazz stars.

Saturday’s program will be opened by free jazz trio Hermia/Darrifourcq/Ceccaldi. The same event will also feature Portuguese drummer Mário Costa, as well as Das Kapital, a stellar star of the European jazz scene. Saturday’s evening event at Pakkahuone begins with a performance by French violinist Théo Ceccaldi and his ensemble, Freaks. After this, the audience will be charmed by pianist Aki Takase’s new ensemble, Japanic. The evening will conclude with a concert by Cuban Omar Sosa & Yilian Cañizares. The final day of the festival at Pakkahuone includes Rodrigo Amado’s quartet This Is Our Language 4tet, Fred Frith Trio featuring Portuguese trumpet player Susana Santos Silva, and Ambrose Akinmusire Origami Harvest, a rising jazz virtuoso hailing from the U.S.

The festival’s late-night hours culminate at the Klubi venue concerts. On Friday, the audiences will be moved by the legendary ska orchestra The Skatalites. On Saturday, the festival proudly presents the world premiere of Samuel Blaser Don Cosmic – Tribute to Don Drummond.

Telakka venue’s festival program is focused on some of the most interesting and current musicians and ensembles in the Finnish jazz scene. Friday evening at Telakka will open with a concert by Jussi Lehtonen Quartet. The evening continues with performances by Olavi Louhivuori’s new ensemble Superposition!, and Manuel Dunkel Quartet. Saturday’s sold out event at Telakka includes Aaltonen / McPhee / Krokfors / Laine, consisting of legendary jazz masters. The evening also features a concert by OK:KO, representing the younger Finnish jazz talent, as well as Lauri Porra’s jazz orchestra Flyover Ensemble. Sunday’s concert features the mesmerizing French ensemble, Laura Perrudin Doksha. Sunday’s concert is also completely free of charge for the audiences and can be listened to as a live recording from Yle Radio 1.
