Travel Guidance
We are regularly monitoring travel guidance for international delegates attending Routes Europe.
Passport validity requirements
Italy follows Schengen area rules. Your passport must:
- have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
- have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area
Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.
Visa Requirements
EU and Schengen citizens can travel without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies for travel to business meetings and conferences. Other visa-exempt countries include the United States, Canada and Australia for stays of up to 90 days in any 180 day period.
Non-exempt countries include India, China and Russia who will have to apply for a Schengen visa.
If you do require a visa support letter, please fill out our visa support letter form. To apply for a visa support letter, you must be registered to attend Routes Europe 2026 before the request is made. Please be aware that you can expect to receive the letter within 3-5 working days from your request.
Countries outside of the EU and Schengen Area please check with your local embassy for any additional Italian government’s entry requirements.
At Italian border control, you may need to show:
- a return or onward ticket
- proof of your travel insurance
- you have enough money for your stay - the amount varies depending on your accommodation
- a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address if you’re staying at your own property
