Catchment Analyzer: Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport in Focus
Catchment Analyzer data is helping airports stay on top of the changing passenger behaviour trends of their catchment area, uncovering underlying patterns rather than relying on pure volume metrics.
Air Canada recently announced a major expansion at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, serving four new major US cities from spring 2026 (New York LaGuardia, Boston, Chicago and Washington).
The latest Catchment Analyzer data shows demand of more than 630,000 one way passengers from Billy Bishop Airport's catchment to these destinations, however the current limited service drives 88% of demand to competing airports (primarily Toronto Pearson International Airport, which captures 81% of total catchment demand).
Notwithstanding a strong presence at Pearson, Air Canada is losing 60% of this catchment demand to competitors, with United Airlines capturing 20% and American Airlines capturing 19%. The introduction of these new services is likely to increase Air Canada's share in the markets.

Air Canada is scheduled to commence 28 times weekly service from Billy Bishop to LaGuardia on 29-Mar-2026, followed by 14 times weekly Chicago O'Hare and seven times weekly Washington Dulles services on 01-Jun-2026, and 21 times weekly Boston service on 01-Jul-2026.
The services will be operated by Jazz for Air Canada Express with Dash 8-Q400 equipment.
Air Canada also plans to increase Billy Bishop-Montreal frequency from eight to nine times daily and Billy Bishop-Ottawa frequency from four to six times daily.
