Recently, Jet2.com has dominated these markets from the area, accounting for 46% of journeys, with a leading charter airline capturing 20% and Ryanair 12%. easyJet's entry into these markets will boost its market share in the region.
Catchment traffic on these markets increased by over 33,000 one way passengers (+8.8%) between 2023 and 2024, an indicator of increasing interest within the catchment.

easyJet brings forward launch of 11th UK base at Newcastle
Newcastle International Airport announced (08-Sep-2025) easyJet plans to open its new three-aircraft base in Newcastle early, making services available from 22-Mar-2026. The LCC plans to operate 11 new routes from the base, in addition to its existing eight domestic and international routes from Newcastle. Updated launch dates include:
- Antalya: 22-Mar-2026;
- Enfidha: 22-Mar-2026;
- Malaga: 23-Mar-2026;
- Nice: 24-Mar-2026;
- Dalaman: 24-Mar-2026;
- Alicante: 26-Mar-2026;
- Malta: 28-Mar-2026;
- Reus: 31-Mar-2026;
- Corfu: 04-Apr-2026;
- Prague: 02-Aug-2026;
- Sharm el-Sheikh: 03-Aug-2026.
easyJet UK county manager Kevin Doyle stated: "Investing in an 11th base in the UK strengthens easyJet's network by positioning it as the carrier of choice to serve UK consumers and capture demand for travel, further growing our share of the UK leisure market for both the airline and easyJet holidays".
Newcastle International Airport marks 20th anniversary of Jet2.com operations
Newcastle International Airport marked (05-Sep-2025) the 20th anniversary of base operations by Jet2.com. The LCC operates nine aircraft and 54 destinations from Newcastle, having handled nearly 15 million passengers from the airport since 2005. The carrier plans to launch new services to Budapest, Chambery, Marrakech and Gdansk in winter 2025/26, as well as Agadir, Barcelona, Porto, Palermo and Preveza services in summer 2026.
Ryanair to base third 737-8200 at Newcastle International Airport for winter 2025/26
Ryanair announced (19-Aug-2025) plans to base a third Boeing 737-8200 at Newcastle International Airport, as part of its "record" winter schedule from Newcastle for 2025/26. The schedule includes 17 routes including five new connections to Brussels, Budapest, Gdansk, Malta and Krakow - with operations to support more than 850 local jobs. Ryanair CCO Jason McGuinness stated: "This third... based aircraft arriving in winter will provide a huge economic boost to the North-East, delivering 120,000 additional seats".
