ALTA Member Airlines Passenger Traffic Climbs 8.2% in May

The Latin American Air Transport Association (ALTA) announced that its member airlines carried 9.75 million passengers in May, up 8.2% from last year.

Miami, July 10, 2008. - The Latin American Air Transport Association (ALTA) announced that its member airlines carried 9.75 million passengers in May, up 8.2% from last year.
Traffic (measured in RPKs) and capacity increased 13.4% and 8.9% respectively. The higher growth in traffic than in ASKs brought up the load factor to 70.8%, 2.8 percentage points higher than in the previous year.
The number of passengers carried year-to-date (January '08 - May '08) increased 7.6% versus the same period the previous year, reaching 47.3 million passengers. During the aforementioned period, traffic (RPKs) increased 12.5%, capacity 10.9%, and passenger load factor reached 71.1%, 1.0 percentage points higher than the previous year.
Freight ton kilometers decreased 10.6% in May and 9.3% year-to-date.

RPK: Revenue Passenger Kilometers; number of seats sold (passengers carried) times the distance traveled.
ASK: Available Seat Kilometers; number of seats available for sale times the distance traveled.
PLF: Passenger Load Factor; average number of seats occupied in each flight, which is obtained by dividing the RPKs by the ASKs.
FTK: Freight Ton Kilometers in passenger services; number of ton of freight carried in passenger services and in 'all cargo' services times the distance traveled.
