Facts (Overview)

Madurai, located on banks of river Vaigai, is one of the oldest cities of India, with a history dating all the way back to the Sangam period of the Pre Christian era.  Madurai apparently named for the nectar that flowed from Shiva’s hair as a blessing for the new city (Madhuram is the Tamil word for sweetness) was built by the Pandyan king Kulasekara.  It was the capital of a kingdom that ruled much of South India during the 4th Century B.C and that conducted trade as far as Greece and Rome.  Madurai also became a centre for the great festivals of poetry and writing- the Tamil Sangams that were being held more than 2 millennia ago. Through the millennia, various dynasties have battled over the city. The vijayanagars built much of the temple during their reign. The city is known for its rich heritage, culture and historical background in the sense that Lord Shiva himself performed sixty-four wonders called” Thiruvilaiyadals” in Madurai many centuries ago. Madurai is the busiest commercial centre in South Tamilnadu. It is famous for Jasmine flowers. Jasmine flowers are transported to various other cities of India from Madurai.

Royal Air Force, India started using Madurai Airport during world war-II from 1942 and was using the airport till 1948. Civil Aircrafts operations in Madurai Airport were started in 1956. Giving way to pressure given by local population to have an operational airport in the southern part of TamilNadu, Civil Aviation Department, Government of India took over the operations of Madurai Airport in 1956.
