Birmingham Airport records strongest ever May as growth and investment continue to deliver for the Midlands
More than 1.3 million passengers travel through BHX during busiest May on record.
Birmingham Airport (BHX) has recorded its busiest May on record, welcoming more than 1.3 million passengers during the month, representing year-on-year growth of 3.2%.
The milestone reflects continued demand for travel from across the Midlands and reinforces Birmingham Airport's position as one of the UK's fastest-growing and most strategically important airports, serving a catchment of 9.2 million people within one hour and 13.3 million people within 90 minutes, while supporting 57,700 jobs across the wider West Midlands.
The record performance comes as Birmingham Airport continues to deliver its £300 million investment programme, designed to enhance passenger experience, improve operational resilience, and support future growth. Central to this transformation is the airport's next-generation security hall, capable of processing up to 3,600 passengers per hour, alongside ongoing terminal improvements, expanded facilities, and enhanced commercial offerings.
May saw strong demand across both leisure and business travel markets, with Dublin, Mallorca, Amsterdam, and Alicante among the most popular destinations. The airport currently serves 145 direct destinations and provides onward connectivity to more than 650 destinations worldwide through approximately 31 airline partners.
The month also saw further expansion of Birmingham Airport's route network, with easyJet launching services to Nice and Jet2 commencing flights to Jersey, providing even greater choice for passengers across the Midlands.
Connectivity to the airport itself has also been strengthened following the arrival of FlixBus services linking Birmingham Airport directly with Oxford and Central London, further extending the airport's reach and accessibility.
Passengers travelling through the airport additionally benefited from the opening of a new 24-hour McDonald's restaurant in May, creating 100 local jobs and enhancing the range of facilities available to customers, colleagues, and the local community.
The strong performance builds on a record-breaking year for Birmingham Airport, which welcomed 13.7 million passengers in 2025, the highest annual total in the airport's history. Today, Birmingham Airport contributes £3.75 billion annually to the West Midlands economy and serves as a critical gateway for international business, tourism, investment, and trade.
Matt Hazelwood, Chief Commercial Officer of Birmingham Airport, said:
“It has been a record-breaking month for passenger numbers here at BHX, with a 3.2% increase year-on-year. There has been a fantastic energy across the airport as our development plans continue to come to fruition, alongside the launch of new routes, including Nice with easyJet and Jersey with Jet2.com this month.
“We were also delighted to welcome a new on-site partner, McDonald’s, conveniently located for customers to grab a meal either before flying or upon arrival.
“We are now looking ahead and preparing for what promises to be a busy summer period.”
