About The Airport
Birmingham Airport is the Midlands' principal international airport and one of the UK's most significant regional gateways, serving one of the country's fastest-growing economic regions.
In 2025, BHX handled 13.7 million passengers, the highest annual figure in its history, representing significant growth compared with 9.7 million passengers in 2014. Over the same period, freight volumes have increased from 5,100 tonnes to 62,000 tonnes. This sustained growth reflects the Airport's expanding role as a catalyst for connectivity, trade, inward investment, and economic development across the West Midlands.
Unlike many other UK airports that serve relatively mature or slower-growing economies, BHX sits at the heart of a region experiencing significant long-term investment. New homes, commercial developments, business parks, logistics hubs, advanced manufacturing facilities, and corporate headquarters continue to reshape the West Midlands, creating structural demand for both business and leisure travel. This gives airlines confidence that the market will continue to grow, with today's routes supported by tomorrow's larger economy.
The Airport's growth has translated into an increasingly significant economic footprint across the West Midlands. In real terms, BHX's economic contribution from its operations alone has more than doubled, reaching approximately £1.3 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA), while the number of jobs supported across the region has increased by around 60% to approximately 20,000.
BHX is currently home to around 31 airlines serving 145 direct destinations across the UK, Europe, and beyond, while providing access to more than 650 one-stop destinations worldwide. Around 12% of passengers travel for business, reflecting the strength of the Midlands' corporate economy, while a further 12% are international visitors travelling to the region for business and leisure, underlining the Airport's role in supporting tourism, trade, and inward investment.
Located at the centre of the Midlands economy, Birmingham Airport benefits from an exceptionally strong catchment, with approximately 9.2 million people living within a one-hour drive and 13.3 million within 90 minutes, representing more than one fifth of the population of England and Wales. This central location, combined with the region's sustained population growth, commercial development, and investment pipeline, positions BHX to benefit from long-term structural demand in a way that relatively few UK regional airports can match.
