The growth of Tallinn Airport in 2011 was 38%
In 2011 more than 1,9 million passengers were served, which is the best result ever for Tallinn Airport. The number of passengers in 2010 was exceeded by 38% making Tallinn one of the fastest growing airports in Europe. More than 525’000 additional passengers passed through the airport compared to the previous year.
Growth in passenger demand was supported by almost all scheduled carriers. Comparing to the previous year 11 new airports were added to our route network and two new carriers – Utair and Flybe commenced operations to Tallinn. Estonian Air handled 33% of the total number of passengers, followed by Ryanair 20% and Air Baltic 10%.
While Helsinki and Riga were traditionally the busiest direct routes, the most popular destination countries proved to be UK and Germany with six and five direct routes respectively. Remarkable growth in operations was experienced on easterly routes to Moscow, St.Petersburg and Kiev.
In 2011 a new project of Baltic Sea cruise turnarounds was introduced. More than 7000 Spanish passengers travelled on charter flights to/from Tallinn for a holiday cruise. The project was carried out in cooperation with Port of Tallinn, DenEesti and CF&S Estonia and was awarded the Logistics Deed of the Year prize. In 2012 about 20’000 cruise passengers are expected to embark/disembark at Tallinn Airport.
Air cargo volumes increased by 54% in 2011 compared to the previous year, in total 18’371 tonnes of mail and freight was carried by air. In average 110 aircraft movements (take-offs and landings) took place every day.
In 2012 continuous growth could be expected, influenced both by Estonian Air strategic growth plans as well as other new routes (Manchester, Frankfurt-Hahn) and additional frequencies (Munich).
