Busiest Month in Aalborg Airport’s 79-year-old History

September 2017 tallied a record high number of travelling passengers to and from Aalborg Airport - with a growth of 3.5 percent in relation to September 2016. Thereby, September 2017 was the busiest month ever in the history of the airport and, additionally, broke the record for most international passengers in a single month.

September is a month, where the business community is in full swing after having finished the summer break and simultaneously a month, where a lot of people go on vacation. This becomes evident when looking at the traffic numbers from September 2017, where the number of passengers travelling to international destinations reached a record high level with an increase of 44.5 percent compared to September 2016.

With an enormous growth in international traffic, a minor decline in domestic traffic and fewer charter passengers the total number of passengers travelling to and from Aalborg Airport in 2017 was 155,547 compared to 150,307 in 2016. The increased number of passengers shows a 3.5 percent growth, which points towards September 2017 being the busiest month in Aalborg Airport’s 79-year-old history.

The international traffic surpasses all previous records

The international traffic in Aalborg Airport has in September 2017 seen a growth of 44.5 percent or 15,467 passengers in relation to same month last year; thus, there were 50,218 passengers travelling to international destinations in 2017 compared to 34,626 in 2016. The massive progress is primarily caused by the new international routes to Oslo, London and Antalya, a higher capacity on the routes to Malaga and Mallorca, and a stable growth for existing routes like the Aalborg-Amsterdam route.

This September has been remarkable for the international traffic, which has reached new heights due to an enormous growth which subsequently has led to a new record for most international passengers in a single month. In September there were 774 departures, whereof especially the increased capacity to Malaga has had a huge impact on the growth - in fact, there were over 2,000 more passengers on this route compared to last month”, Airport director Søren Svendsen states.

More focus on the domestic traffic

There were 80,756 domestic passengers in September 2017 compared to last September where there were 84,588 domestic passengers, thus the domestic traffic has declined with 4.7 percent.

We have in this week, together with, among others, SAS, Norwegian and Copenhagen’s Airport, started a more extensive domestic campaign with the goal of creating more focus on the 17 daily departures between Aalborg and Copenhagen. The campaign gives an expectation of especially people from the Copenhagen area to discover the many and excellent possibilities for flying to Aalborg and among other things experience Northern Jutland”, Søren Svendsen concludes.
