The Easter holidays kicked off the summer programme at Aalborg Airport

The Easter holidays were concluded in the best possible way, as the first stage of the summer traffic program was launched at Aalborg Airport – featuring routes to destinations such as Bornholm, Antalya, Naples, Malaga, and the new summer route, Girona. With the Easter holidays in focus, March 2024 saw fewer business travelers to Copenhagen, but there was momentum in charter and international traffic, exceeding expectations leading up to the summer program 2024.

In total, there were 109,138 travelers through Aalborg Airport in March 2024, with only 1.4 percent fewer travelers than in the same month last year. Since Easter fell in the last week of March this year instead of at the beginning of April, there was a decrease in the number of domestic travelers to Copenhagen, but at the same time, holiday trips abroad were in high demand for Danish travelers. This resulted in a March result above expectations and a good starting point for the launch of summer traffic.

Wanderlust in Focus with the Start of Summer Routes

For charter and international traffic, there was an overall increase of well over 28 percent compared to March 2023. And with the launch of summer routes such as Naples and Antalya, as well as fully booked flights to destinations like Malaga, Madeira, and the Canary Islands, the holiday atmosphere at Aalborg Airport was in full swing.

"With a significant growth in the number of travelers abroad, March has exceeded our expectations considerably. Despite a decrease in domestic traffic, we come very close to last year's result, with an even greater desire to travel abroad throughout the month, especially leading up to Easter, where routes to Antalya, the Faroe Islands, Naples, Amsterdam, and Malaga have been in high demand," says CEO Niels Hemmingsen.

Spanish Holiday Destinations Highlighted in this Year's Summer Program

On the second day of Easter a new route was welcomed at Aalborg Airport, as the first travelers could head to the Spanish city of Girona and the beautiful Costa Brava coast with Ryanair. On this occasion, there was ribbon-cutting, balloon arches, and cream puffs for the excited travelers, who looked forward to a sunny holiday in Spain. With this new route, Spain is the major attraction in this year's summer program – featuring destinations such as Alicante, Barcelona, Girona, Gran Canaria, Mallorca, and Malaga.

"There's a good reason to plan a holiday in Spain from Aalborg Airport this spring and throughout the summer, where the new route to Girona provides entirely new holiday opportunities in the city and along the Spanish coast. In addition to the five weekly flights to Malaga, last year's major route announcements, Alicante and Barcelona, are already in operation right after Easter – with up to two weekly flights. If we number up the Spanish departures, we will at times have up to 13 direct departures per week,"  Niels Hemmingsen concludes.
