BTS Airport Recorded the Highest Number of Passengers in May in its History

BTS Airport has reached a historic milestone! During May 2025, the airport achieved its best operational result in terms of the number of passengers handled ever recorded in the fifth month of the year! In May 2025, a total of 172,464 passengers were handled on arrivals and departures, representing an increase of 34% compared to May of last year.
“In May, we achieved a historic record – the highest number of passengers handled in May during the airport’s 74-year history, dating back to 1951! This record result is a great success thanks to new flight routes and increased flight frequencies. The previous May record from 2008, when 171,466 passengers were handled on arrivals and departures, has now been surpassed by almost a thousand passengers this May,” announced Dušan Novota, CEO and Chairman of the Board of M. R. Štefánik Airport.
The most popular destinations for passengers departing from Bratislava in May were London (Stansted and Luton airports), Hurghada, Alghero, Milan, and Malta. “The record growth in the number of passengers in May was also supported by new direct routes to GdaĆsk, Bari, and Milan-Malpensa with Ryanair, regular flights to Istanbul and Antalya with Pegasus Airlines, to Hurghada with Air Cairo, as well as generally increased frequency of regular flights, a daily connection to Alghero in Sardinia, and charter flights organized by travel agencies,” the CEO listed the reasons for the growth.
During the first five months of the year (from the beginning of January to the end of May), Bratislava Airport has already handled nearly 600,000 passengers, to be precise 593,712 people, which represents an increase of 22% compared to the same period last year.
In May, the airport saw a total of 2,453 take-offs and landings (+10% vs. 2024), and from the beginning of the year to the end of May, there were a total of 9,475 flights, three percent more than in the same period last year.
"Excellent growth figures continue in the area of air cargo transport as well. Over the first five months of this year, the airport handled 7,678 tons of cargo, representing an increase of 66% compared to the first five months of 2024. Even in May alone, cargo transport grew by 50% – while last May we handled 1,051 tons of cargo, this May it was already 1,581 tons,” concluded Dušan Novota, the CEO of the airport.
