Future Rail Project to Bring São Paulo Closer to Viracopos Airport
Already served by one of Brazil's most developed highway networks, Viracopos enjoys efficient road access to São Paulo and the surrounding metropolitan region
A major rail infrastructure project planned by the São Paulo State Government is set to further strengthen the long-term competitive position of Viracopos International Airport (VCP) by expanding its accessibility to Brazil's largest air travel market.
Already served by one of Brazil's most developed highway networks, Viracopos enjoys efficient road access to São Paulo and the surrounding metropolitan region. The planned rail connection will complement this existing infrastructure by adding a new high-capacity public transport option, further enhancing the airport's accessibility and passenger convenience.
Under the proposed Intercity Train (TIC) project, passengers will be able to travel between downtown São Paulo and Campinas in approximately 64 minutes. A planned rail connection between Campinas and Viracopos will complete the multimodal journey, bringing the airport even closer to millions of potential passengers across Greater São Paulo.
By complementing Viracopos' already strong ground connectivity, the project is expected to further expand the airport's catchment area, increasing its appeal for both existing and prospective airline services.
As planning for the future rail link progresses, the project reflects São Paulo State's long-term commitment to improving regional mobility and connectivity. For airlines, it represents an additional indicator of sustained market development, complementing the strong accessibility, economic vitality and demand fundamentals that already make Viracopos an attractive gateway today. Rail services are currently expected to commence in 2031.
For airlines evaluating opportunities in Brazil, the significance of the project extends beyond the rail infrastructure itself. By broadening the airport's long-term catchment area and strengthening its multimodal connectivity, the investment further enhances Viracopos' value proposition as a gateway to one of Latin America's largest and most dynamic aviation markets.
