Facts (Overview)
Skopje, the capital city of Macedonia, is the center of the Macedonian Government and all foreign embassies. It is an important crossroads of trade, strategically located on the Balkan Region's highway and rail way networks.
The European Parliament's adoption of the visa liberalization for Macedonia on December 19, 2009 has opened a new era for Macedonian travel. The removals of visa requirements have freed traveling between Macedonia and 25 out of 27 EU member states with 500 million citizens.
Macedonia, on its way to join the European Common Aviation Area (ECAA), is also lifting the bilateral agreements which will increase the competition and operational standards.
Skopje International Airport (SKP) handled Skopje: 764k passengers in 2011. The European Parliament's adoption of visa liberalization for Macedonia and the lifting of the bilateral agreements are expected to boost the air traffic and passenger numbers in the following years.
