Aberdeen International Airport Reports Passenger Numbers For June 2016

Figures released by Aberdeen International Airport have shown that 285,555 passengers travelled through the airport in June, a decrease of 11.9% compared to the same period last year.

International and domestic traffic was down 5.5% and 15.6% respectively, with helicopter traffic down 11.4%.

Carol Benzie, managing director of Aberdeen International Airport, said: “Whilst the performance of the wider economy is continuing to have a direct impact on passenger numbers, our route development team is working hard to attract new routes and airlines to the city.

“Last week’s welcome announcement from Ryanair, which will introduce twice-weekly, year round services to Alicante and Malaga next year, is a tremendous boost for the airport and our passengers. It follows the launch earlier this year of Wizz Air’s direct service to Warsaw and Icelandair’s Reykjavik route, both of which are performing extremely well.

“In launching the new routes, Ryanair cited Air Passenger Duty (APD) as a barrier to further growth which is a position I can only endorse. I firmly believe the reduction and eventual abolition of APD will play a major role in securing further new routes and maintaining vital, existing domestic services”.

The first phase of Aberdeen International Airport’s ambitious £20 million terminal transformation project is underway. The redevelopment will see a 50% extension of the existing terminal – the biggest upgrade since it first opened in 1977.

The current domestic and international reclaim facilities have been temporarily relocated to allow construction of the new two-storey extension. The domestic baggage reclaim has been relocated to a temporary facility just outside the main terminal building in the lower forecourt. The international baggage reclaim facility and passport control are temporarily located on an aircraft stand just outside the international walkway.
