Aruba Airport Launches Self Bag Drop Service to Enhance Passenger Experience

Aruba Airport Authority N.V. (AAA) has successfully launched its new Self Bag Drop (SBD) service at Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA), marking another step in its ongoing commitment to innovation, operational efficiency, and passenger experience enhancement.

Located in the U.S. check-in hall, the Self Bag Drop units officially went into operation at the end of September following a successful testing and training phase. Together with existing self-service kiosks, the new technology enables passengers traveling to the United States to complete the entire check-in and baggage process independently—streamlining throughput and reducing processing times at peak periods.

The rollout is being executed in phases:

  • Phase 1 (September 25, 2025): Initial implementation with American Airlines.

  • Phase 2 (October 2025): Expansion to include JetBlue, Spirit, and Southwest Airlines.

Other U.S. carriers will continue with their current check-in procedures, with future integration being evaluated based on operational performance and airline interest.

“The introduction of Self Bag Drop represents an important milestone in our continuous efforts to modernize airport operations,” said Jurgen Benschop, COO of Aruba Airport Authority. “It allows us to improve efficiency for both passengers and airline partners while supporting the long-term transformation of our terminal facilities.”

The project comprises four dedicated SBD units developed in collaboration with airline partners and SITA, Aruba Airport’s technology provider. The phased approach ensures seamless adoption, minimizes operational disruption, and supports consistent service delivery during implementation.

This initiative aligns with Gateway 2030, Aruba Airport’s multi-year expansion and modernization program designed to deliver future-ready infrastructure, increased capacity, and improved passenger flow. Despite ongoing construction, innovations such as the Self Bag Drop underscore Aruba Airport’s focus on operational excellence and its readiness to meet the evolving needs of airline partners and travelers alike.
