Aruba Airport Authority Advances Gateway 2030
Aruba Airport Authority N.V. (AAA) highlights the ongoing work within its transformative Gateway 2030 program, as activities for Phase 1B advance.
This next milestone represents a strategic advancement in the ongoing modernization of Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA), reinforcing Aruba’s position as a reliable, efficient, and scalable gateway for current and future network growth.
Gateway 2030: Building the Future Operating Environment at AUA
Gateway 2030 is a multi-year airport development program focused on expanding capacity, optimizing operational flow, and enhancing infrastructure to support evolving airline and passenger demand. The program is designed to ensure that AUA remains competitive within the region while meeting industry standards for efficiency, sustainability, and passenger service.
Phase 1A: Expanded Processing Capacity & System Upgrades
Completed in April 2025, Phase 1A delivered a new, technologically advanced U.S. Check-In Terminal designed to streamline processing and reduce dwell times. This facility is supported by a next-generation baggage handling system capable of processing up to 2,000 bags per hour, significantly improving throughput and operational reliability—key metrics for airline partners evaluating hub connectivity and on-time performance.
Phase 1B: Increased Airside Capacity and Improved Passenger Throughput
Phase 1B introduces a set of infrastructure enhancements aimed at increasing gate availability, improving turnaround efficiency, and elevating the overall departure experience. Key components include:
-
Three new contact gates, each equipped with a boarding bridge
-
Three additional bus gates to support flexible stand utilization
-
Expanded hold rooms to accommodate higher peak-hour passenger volumes
-
Improved circulation areas to enhance operational flow and reduce congestion
Construction has begun at Gate 8 (Building D), where rapid progress is visible. A new connecting bridge will link Building D to the future Building E, which will house the three new contact gates. Structural steel installations and wall foundations are currently underway, marking a significant step in the airport’s capacity-building efforts.
Interim CEO James Fazio highlighted the operational importance of this phase:
“Phase 1B reflects our commitment to delivering an airport experience that meets world-class operational standards while maintaining Aruba’s signature hospitality. Each phase of Gateway 2030 is designed to strengthen efficiency, passenger comfort, and airline reliability across our network.”
Looking Ahead: Phase 2 and Additional Capacity Enhancements
Preparations for Phase 2 are in progress and will begin immediately after Phase 1B’s completion. This phase will further expand AUA’s landside and processing capabilities, featuring:
-
A new common-use check-in hall for both U.S. and non-U.S. departures
-
Upgraded immigration and security facilities
-
Enhanced U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) processing areas
-
A new commercial and F&B plaza designed to support increased passenger volumes
With an emphasis on capacity, efficiency, and operational resilience, Aruba Airport remains committed to providing an infrastructure platform that supports airline growth, strengthens regional connectivity, and delivers a seamless travel experience for passengers.
