Birmingham Airport Community Trust Fund Helps Sea Cadets Set Sail

Birmingham Airport has proudly awarded Training Ship Stirling, in Shard End, a sum of money to help them purchase a brand new RS Quest sailing boat.

The registered charity is part of the Sea Cadets Corp which, for the past 60 years, has been offering young people in the local community the opportunity to take part in activities under the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy.

Andy Holding, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Birmingham Airport, said: “The trustees decided to award Training Ship Stirling with this funding as the unit helps hundreds of local young people to develop skills and confidence through nautical adventure.

“This is very much in line with our Corporate Responsibility Strategy of developing local communities and promoting health and wellbeing in the area.”

Anthony Stephens, Vice Chairman of Training Ship Stirling, said: “The addition of this fantastic boat to our fleet will give our members much more valuable time out on the water.

“Sailing brings so much benefit to the children, not only is it physically good for them but it also teaches them how to work as a team. The boat will allow more children to flourish and develop under our guidance and support.”

The funding awarded, forms part of the Birmingham Airport Community Trust Fund which awards grants of up to £3,000 to community groups in areas most affected by the Airport’s operations. Each year the airport contributes £75,000 to the Community Trust Fund.  Additionally any charges made to airlines which breach night noise regulations, are added to the fund.

The next available round of Trust Fund awards will be made in October 2016. The closing date for receipt of completed applications is Friday 26th August 2016. More information is available on the Birmingham Airport website.
