EGYPTAIR will introduce a new four-times-weekly from October 2026, establishing the Midlands' only direct link to the Egyptian capital.
Operating year-round on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, the route strengthens BHX's Egyptian network alongside Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh, while opening up onward connectivity via Cairo across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
The launch is supported by strong underlying growth at Birmingham Airport. BHX welcomed a record 13.7 million passengers in 2025, up from 9.7 million in 2014, while freight volumes have increased from 5,100 tonnes to 62,000 tonnes over the same period, reflecting the airport's expanding role in regional connectivity, trade, and economic growth.
Birmingham Airport serves a catchment of 9.2 million people within one hour and 13.3 million people within 90 minutes, providing a robust demand base across leisure, visiting friends and relatives (VFR), and business travel segments. The airport currently hosts approximately 31 airlines, serving 145 direct destinations and providing onward connectivity to more than 650 destinations worldwide.
Business travel remains a key strength for the airport, which handles approximately 1.6 million business passengers annually and serves around 60% of the West Midlands business travel market. The region itself is home to a £77 billion economy, the UK's second-largest city, and one of Europe's largest metropolitan areas, creating strong demand for international connectivity.
Operated by Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, the new service combines efficiency with passenger comfort, supporting both sustainable growth and network development.
The addition of Cairo further strengthens Birmingham Airport's position as one of the UK's leading regional gateways. Contributing £3.75 billion annually to the West Midlands economy and supporting 57,700 jobs across the wider region, BHX continues to attract new airline partners, expand international connectivity, and support trade, tourism, investment, and economic growth across the Midlands.
Matt Hazelwood, Chief Commercial Officer of Birmingham Airport said: “We are delighted to connect our passengers directly to a bucket-list destination like Cairo, a city that effortlessly blends thousands of years of incredible history with a contemporary culture, via our new partnership with EGYPTAIR. This route will strengthen our Egyptian offering, providing greater choice for our customers direct from Birmingham Airport.”
Captain Mohamed Elian, EGYPTAIR said: " Expanding our footprint in the UK by adding Birmingham to our route map reflects our commitment to a market that holds tremendous significance for EGYPTAIR with operating 4 weekly flights between the two cities onboard our newest B737MAX8. Cairo serves as a magnificent gateway, and with this new service, we are making it easier than ever for both business and leisure travellers to experience Egypt. Beyond the capital, our extensive domestic network offers optimized connectivity, allowing passengers to step off their flight from Birmingham and quickly find themselves relaxing on the Red Sea coast or exploring the timeless treasures of Upper Egypt."
