Birmingham Airport (BHX) has welcomed the inaugural EGYPTAIR service to Cairo, strengthening the Midlands' international connectivity.

Full-service network carrier EGYPTAIR officially launched its new service between Birmingham Airport and Cairo on Sunday 25th October, marking another significant milestone in the airport's expanding international route network.

Operating four times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, the new service provides Birmingham's first and only direct connection to the Egyptian capital, strengthening links between the Midlands and one of Africa's most important economic and cultural centres.

Serving one of the UK's largest and most diverse passenger catchments, Birmingham Airport benefits from strong year-round demand across business, leisure, and visiting friends and relatives (VFR) markets. The introduction of EGYPTAIR's service supports this demand, providing greater choice for passengers while strengthening connections between the Midlands and Egypt's growing business and tourism markets.

Beyond Cairo, the route also opens up convenient onward connections through EGYPTAIR's extensive international network, connecting passengers to destinations across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. This further strengthens Birmingham Airport's role as a gateway for international travel, supporting both outbound journeys and inbound visitors to the Midlands.

Matt Hazelwood, Chief Commercial Officer at Birmingham Airport, said, “We’re thrilled to see EGYPTAIR’s inaugural flight take off from Birmingham Airport. We’re confident this will be a popular route for those looking to get away to enjoy some winter sun and explore what Cairo has to offer. This service will also support the Egyptian community across the Midlands, making it easier to stay connected with loved ones and travel for business purposes.”

Captain Mohamed Elian, Chairman and CEO of EGYPTAIR Airlines, commented, “EGYPTAIR is pleased to launch its first service to Birmingham, marking the addition of a new destination to its expanding global network and establishing Birmingham as its third destination in the United Kingdom. This new service will connect Birmingham seamlessly to EGYPTAIR’s extensive network across Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East, offering passengers enhanced travel options and convenient connections to a wide range of destinations worldwide.”

The inaugural event included a ceremonial cake-cutting and special gifts for passengers flying out on the airline’s Boeing 737 Max 8, with several representatives from BHX and EGYPTAIR in attendance to mark the occasion.
