Prague Airport handled 5% more passengers in the first half of this year than last year
In the first half of this year, Prague Airport handled a total of 7,841,865 passengers, which represents a 5% year-on-year increase. Traditionally, the busiest destination based on the number of handled passengers was London. Amsterdam recorded the highest increase in the number of handled passengers. Compared to the same period last year, the number of handled passengers on long-haul routes also significantly increased by as much as 10%.
“The year-on-year increase in the number of handled passengers for the past six months is close to the upper limit of our prediction made at the beginning of this year. Such a good result was supported by the launch of direct connections to nine new destinations, the arrival of three new airline operators and higher frequency on ten routes, one of which is long-haul,” said Václav Řehoř, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Prague Airport, commenting on the operating results. “The excellent operating results and further increase in the number of passengers demonstrate the fact that the Prague Airport operation has not been significantly affected by the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft,” adds Václav Řehoř.
In the first half of this year, passengers used connections from Prague to London the most. In the ranking of the busiest destinations, it is followed by Paris, Moscow, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Furthermore, the most operated flights were between Prague and London in the first half of 2019, specifically 95 flights per week. As many as 63 flights per week headed to Moscow, up to 58 flights per week to Paris, 54 flights per week to Amsterdam and 51 flights per week to Warsaw.
The largest increase in the number of handled passengers was recorded by the direct route to Amsterdam (year-on-year increase of approx. 30,000 passengers), Antalya (approx. 26,000 passengers), Doha (approx. 25,000 passengers), Riga (approx. 18,000 passengers) and Copenhagen (approx. 16,000 passengers).
The numbers of handled passengers were also increasing on long-haul routes, despite the fact that some seasonal long-haul flights were launched at the very end of the half-year period. For the first six months of this year, there was a 10% year-on-year increase in the number of handled passengers on fifteen direct long-haul routes from Prague. “We have managed to successfully cover the network of short-haul flights across Europe. Therefore, expansion of the long-haul routes is a critical point of our strategy for developing direct flights from Prague. The continuously increasing number of handled passengers on long-haul routes confirms that this strategy is correct and that expansion of long-haul flights has huge potential,” said Václav Řehoř, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Prague Airport. The busiest long-haul destination in the first half of 2019 was Dubai with a total of 223,797 handled passengers.
The most incoming flights for the first half of this year were from Great Britain, Italy, Russia, France and Germany,
