About The Airport
Almaty International Airport (ALA) is Kazakhstan’s busiest airport and the largest airport in Central Asia. Serving Kazakhstan’s largest city and economic centre, ALA is the main base of Air Astana and a key aviation hub along the modern Silk Road. The airport handled 11.9 million passengers in 2025.
TAV Airports acquired an 85% stake in Almaty Airport and took over its operations in April 2021. The remaining 15% is held by the Kazakhstan Infrastructure Fund, managed by VPE Capital and backed by Kazyna Capital Management. Almaty is the first airport in TAV Airports’ portfolio that the company owns and operates rather than managing under a time-limited concession.
TAV Airports invested EUR 257 million in the new international terminal and other airport improvements by the end of 2024. Terminal 2 opened on 1 June 2024, more than doubling the airport’s annual passenger capacity to over 14 million.
Almaty International Airport has received significant Skytrax recognition, including World’s Most Improved Airport 2025, World’s Best New Airport Terminal for Terminal 2 and Best Regional Airport in Central Asia/CIS. Terminal 2 is accredited at Level 1 of the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.
