Historic Milestone for Bratislava Airport: Four Millionth Passenger Welcomed for the First Time in Its History

M. R. Štefánik Airport Bratislava has reached a historic milestone. For the first time in its 75-year history, the airport has surpassed four million passengers handled in a single calendar year. The four millionth passenger, who was departing from Bratislava on a flight to Istanbul, Türkiye, was welcomed at the airport today by Slovak Minister of Transport Jozef Ráž, Dušan Novota, CEO and Chairman of the Board of M. R. Štefánik Airport, and Erkan Özoral, Ambassador of Türkiye to Slovakia.

Bratislava Airport continues to break its own historical records. Last year, in 2025, the airport set its previous all-time annual record, handling 2,438,215 passengers. This year, however, it has already significantly surpassed that record.

“Handling four million passengers in a single year is a historic achievement for Bratislava Airport. Just a few years ago, this milestone seemed a distant goal; today, we are reaching it as early as October. This result is primarily driven by the significant expansion of the airport’s scheduled route network. Without a doubt, 2026 is the most successful year in the airport’s 75-year history. We expect to handle approximately 4.3 million passengers by the end of the year,” said Dušan Novota, CEO and Chairman of the Board of M. R. Štefánik Airport.

Slovak Minister of Transport Jozef Ráž also welcomed the historic achievement.

“Four million passengers at Bratislava Airport is excellent news not only for the airport itself but also for Slovakia as a whole. This historic result confirms that Bratislava has the potential to become a significant aviation hub in our region. Expanding the network of air connections gives Slovaks more travel options, supports inbound tourism and improves Slovakia’s accessibility for international visitors. We particularly value our cooperation with Wizz Air, whose decision to establish a base in Bratislava, significantly expand its international route network and launch a domestic air service between Bratislava and Košice has made a major contribution to this historic achievement. I am delighted that Slovakia’s largest international airport is reaching such an exceptional milestone in the year of its 75th anniversary,” said Jozef Ráž, Slovak Minister of Transport.

Both officials presented commemorative gifts to the milestone passenger, Petra from Nitra, at the airport before her departure from Bratislava to Istanbul with Pegasus Airlines.

From Just a Few Thousand Passengers to a Historic Four Million

M. R. Štefánik Airport was established in 1951 and is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. In its early years of operation, it handled only a few thousand passengers annually. Today, that figure has grown to millions.

Throughout its history, the airport had surpassed the two-million-passenger mark in a calendar year on only five occasions: in 2007, 2008, 2018, 2019 and 2025. It first exceeded three million passengers in August this year and needed less than two months to handle the next million.

Since the beginning of the year, the airport has recorded its highest monthly passenger numbers ever. In June, it surpassed half a million passengers in a single month for the first time, handling 510,152 passengers. The figure rose to 619,902 in July, and in August the airport set a new all-time monthly record, handling 625,742 arriving and departing passengers.

During the first nine months of 2026, M. R. Štefánik Airport handled a total of 3,693,231 passengers, representing a year-on-year increase of 99%. In some spring months, passenger growth exceeded 150% or even 160% compared with the same period of the previous year.

Bratislava Among Europe’s Fastest-Growing Airports

The exceptional growth at Bratislava Airport is also reflected in international statistics. According to data from ACI EUROPE, the airport ranked first in passenger growth among European airports in the medium-sized airport category, covering airports handling between one and ten million passengers annually.

While European airports are recording average year-on-year passenger growth of approximately 4%, Bratislava is achieving growth rates many times higher.

The airport’s historic growth is driven primarily by the expansion of its scheduled route network, the opening of Wizz Air’s base in Bratislava in November 2025, the expansion of Ryanair’s operations and growing passenger demand for flights from Bratislava.

The most popular destinations from Bratislava during the first nine months of 2026 were Barcelona, London, Antalya, Košice and Rome. The domestic air service between Bratislava and Košice is also among the most frequently used routes.

The historic increase in passenger numbers has been accompanied by growth in aircraft movements and air cargo volumes. From January to the end of September 2026, the airport recorded a total of 32,722 aircraft movements, up 43% compared with the same period last year. Air cargo handled reached 16,335 tonnes, representing a year-on-year increase of 17%.

M. R. Štefánik Airport expects to handle approximately 4.3 million passengers by the end of 2026, almost double the number recorded in 2025.
