Slovakia’s First-Ever Direct Air Link to Azerbaijan Takes Off from Bratislava

The first passengers departed from M. R. Štefánik Airport Bratislava today on a new scheduled service to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The new direct route, operated by Wizz Air, launches with a frequency of twice weekly. To mark the occasion, the airport treated departing passengers to a specially themed cake, while the Embassy of Azerbaijan arranged a tasting of local products for the first passengers.

“For the first time in history, Slovakia has a direct air connection with Azerbaijan, thanks to Wizz Air’s new route from Bratislava to Baku. Together with our scheduled services to Armenia and Georgia, this makes the South Caucasus region more accessible than ever for travellers from Slovakia and neighbouring countries. Wizz Air, which has four aircraft based at Bratislava Airport, is also expanding its network with further attractive destinations, including Agadir in Morocco, Hurghada in Egypt and Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a result, passengers will have access to the widest-ever range of scheduled routes from Bratislava during the upcoming winter season,” said Dušan Novota, CEO and Chairman of the Board of M. R. Štefánik Airport. “We expect exceptionally strong demand for flights to Baku, as reflected in the load factor on the inaugural flight,” he added.

In addition to the new route to Azerbaijan, Wizz Air has launched direct services from Bratislava to Agadir in Morocco and Hurghada in Egypt with the start of the winter 2026/27 flight schedule in late October. The airline will also launch a new route to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on 3 December.

“We are delighted to celebrate the launch of our new direct route between Bratislava and Baku, bringing Azerbaijan’s vibrant capital closer to Slovak travellers. With its unique combination of rich history, fascinating culture and modern architecture, Baku is an exciting addition to our growing network. This new connection not only opens the door to exploring a remarkable destination but also creates new opportunities for travellers from Azerbaijan to discover Slovakia. As we continue to expand our presence in Bratislava, we remain committed to offering our passengers more destinations, greater choice and affordable travel options,” said Vera Jardan, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air.

The new route operates twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Tickets are available via Wizz Air’s official website and mobile app.
