According to Romania's General Transport Master Plan,  Sibiu Airport is currently classified as Regional Airport but is expected to develop into the International Hub Airport category later. The modernization project for Sibiu International Airport aims to provide necessary infrastructure capacity and operational facilities required by satisfaction level of air transport services in 2020 and 2025. The project includes:

  • Expansion of passenger terminal by 2020
  • Expanding passenger terminal by 2025
  • Taxiway extension by 2020
  • Analysis of the opportunity to develop a cargo terminal by 2020

Problems achieved
This intervention addresses the following issues:

  • Lack of capacity of the terminal 2020
  • Increased freight flows generated by international connectivity

  • In 2011, the airport recorded a total of 176,906 passengers (26,482 internal traffic and
    150,424 international traffic). If the modernization program is implemented entirely,
    the number of passengers could reach the figure of 1,517,611 by 2020 (329,756 domestic traffic and 1,187,865 international traffic) and 1,886,252 by 2025 (409,844 domestic traffic and 1,476,408 international traffic).
