Traffic report of first quarter: traffic continues to increase in Berlin-Brandenburg

Air traffic continues to increase in Berlin and Brandenburg, even as the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt is set to open. A total of 5,293,856 passengers used the airports Tegel and Schönefeld in the first quarter; 5.6 per cent more than in the same period the previous year.

While traffic figures are increasing in Tegel – 3,767,425 passengers were handled here in the first quarter and thus 7.8 per cent more than in the same period the previous year – traffic figures for Schönefeld Airport are remaining at the previous year's level. In the first three months of 2012, 1,526,431 passengers were recorded at Schönefeld Airport; 0.3 per cent more than in the first quarter of the previous year.

The total number of flight movements in the first quarter was down 3.2 per cent on the year at 54,186 take-offs and landings. While the number of passengers being transported is increasing, the number of flight movements is decreasing – supporting the use of bigger aircraft and improved capacity utilisation.

As expected, the ailing economy is having a negative impact on air freight: in the first quarter, air freight transported was down 1.6 per cent on the year to 7,472 tonnes.

- Traffic report for March: Tegel Airport is on the home straight

A total of 1,993,173 passengers used the airports Tegel and Schönefeld in March; 6.3 per cent more than in the same month the previous year. Tegel Airport continues to be the growth driver: Tegel recorded 1,430,938 passengers in March; 8.8 per cent more than in the same month the previous year. 567,235 passengers were recorded at Schönefeld Airport last month, representing a marginal increase of 0.3 per cent on March 2011.

Also down on the year was the total number of flight movements, by 3.1 per cent to 19,880 take-offs and landings, and air freight transported, by 3.7 per cent to 2,755 tonnes.

All values for this month are based on preliminary figures.
