Tampa International Airport saw all-time highs in March, which is traditionally the heaviest month of the year for passenger traffic

Tampa International Airport’s official spring break season came to an end 10 April, and preliminary data showed that it was the busiest on record, as Airport officials predicted.

While official passenger numbers reported by airlines are not yet available, TPA’s checkpoint data shows that nearly 2.5 million estimated passengers traveled through the Airport during the spring break period, surpassing the previous 2019 spring break record by approximately 50,000 passengers. On Sunday, March 19, TPA had its busiest day ever, with more than 90,000 passengers traveling through the Airport. That Saturday and Sunday combined saw more than 178,000 passengers, also a record for the busiest weekend in TPA history.

In the first 10 days of April, TPA was seeing nearly 6 percent higher traffic than the same period in April 2019.

Unlike the winter holiday periods, TPA saw fewer operational disruptions with airline delays and cancelations, making for a relatively smooth spring break. The average TSA checkpoint wait time for travelers was under 10 minutes.

If unprecedented passport demand and expert travel forecasts are any indications, this summer could be extremely busy as well.
