New Businesses in Malmö

New reports from the trade and industry organization in Malmö tells us that the establishment of new businesses and companies in the south of Sweden has grown steadily since the year of 2003. The growth number is about 2000 companies per year, meaning 5-6 per day!

Statistics for the whole of Sweden shows that about 68% of all newly started business are still active after three years. The time expected to be needed in order to establish a company in its specific market.

The years of 2007 and 2008 gave all time high records in terms of newly established businesses and companies in Malmö. In 2009, when the economic recess held Europe in a firm grip, southern Sweden faced a more positive market situation and even more companies and businesses were established in Malmö!

A total of 2 500 companies and businesses were established in Malmö in 2009. This is about 13 companies per 1000 inhabitants (16-64 years). This may be compared to 16 in Stockholm, 11 in Gothenburg and 10 in Sweden total.

Even the Swedish Public Employment Service in Malmö reports a strong growth when it comes to starting new companies and businesses. The number of applications for support and consultation has doubled between the 1st of June 2009 and 31st of May 2010 and the same time period a year earlier.

The explanation may be the weaker economic climate but also the changes made in the regulations for start-up support and guidance. For instance, younger people are now allowed to start their own firm which allows many students to implement the business ideas they have either after secondary school or university.
