World known research facilities putting Lund on the map

ESS, or European Spalliation Source, is a new research facility which will not only complement at least two handfuls of research centers in the world but it will also be the biggest investment within research and development in Sweden in 25 years!

ESS can be seen as a huge microscope where neutrons are shot through pieces of materials in order to learn how and what it is made up of. This instrument will give totally new opportunities to researchers and developers within chemistry, nano and energy technology, environment, food research, bio technology, medicine, material probing etc.

The placement of Max-IV, the upgrade of Max-Lab and a sister facility to ESS, in Lund might have been the determining factor for ESS to be placed in the same city. Both facilities will positively influence each other.

The ESS lab alone is estimated to generate 700 more job opportunities per year from now on, meaning that there will be about 3500 people employed in direct connection to the research facility already in 2015. Assume that half of these job opportunities will be office related, that would create a demand for about 7000 sqm of new office space within the coming six years. Following upon this is the need for about 500 new houses or apartments.

The movements of people to and within the region will almost guaranteed grow in the coming 5-10 years due to ESS. This will create a need for more and better road and rail traffic. According to estimates made, there will be 30% more road traffic which will cause a need for 6 lane highways at some distances. Even more railway tracks will have to be build, for example there will be a need for two more tracks between Malmö and Lund and as it is predicted that Copenhagen Airport will be full by 2014 with very little room for expansion. This causes a bigger need for concentration to Malmö Airport both in terms of air traffic and also railway connections to Lund and Malmö.

Health services and public sector have to expand in order to be able to take care of and treat a larger amount of inhabitants. Sports and other recreational activities will need more support in order to expand their programs. The number of schools and daycare centers has to increase and not only in today's form but also with international units for all the international families moving to Lund for ESS. The university and technical college will most likely also have to expand both their educational programs as well as their facilities due to the predicted even greater interest in conducting studies in Lund, close to international research and development.

A side from the above "musts" for the city of Lund there will most likely be entrepreneurs and other investors starting up innovation centers like IDEON in Lund and MEDEON in Malmö as well as science centers like Universeum in Gothenburg and Tom's Experiments in Södertälje. Finally, to this there will be a great amount of new job opportunities in public transport, stores and shops, restaurants and cafés and most likely some of these will be moving into Lund and create and even greater need for housing etc. A growing Lund is what's to expect!!
