Powerhouse Panel: State of the Industry

Air transport in 2026 faces resilient demand, but the industry’s operating environment has become far more complex. Passenger traffic continues to grow and load factors are expected to reach record levels, yet profitability is forecast to halve as Middle East disruption, sharply higher fuel prices, supply chain constraints and weaker macroeconomic conditions place renewed pressure on airline margins.

This panel will examine how aviation leaders are planning for growth in a higher-cost, more volatile environment. Panellists will discuss how airlines, airports and destinations are adapting networks amid aircraft delivery delays, airspace restrictions, infrastructure bottlenecks, rising regulatory costs and shifting passenger behaviour. The discussion will also explore where demand remains robust, where capacity is being constrained, and how the industry can maintain connectivity, profitability and sustainability in the years ahead.

Navigating Turbulence: Middle East Airlines, Airports, and Tourism Strategies for Recovery

Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer, Gulf Air

The Middle East remains one of the world’s most important aviation crossroads, but the geopolitical crisis in the region means airlines and airports are facing a far more difficult operating landscape. IATA expects Middle East airlines to move from a $7.2 billion profit in 2025 to a $4.3 billion loss in 2026, with demand forecast to fall 11.4% and capacity down 4.4% as airspace disruption, weaker transfer flows, elevated fuel costs and shifting demand patterns test the resilience of the region’s aviation and tourism sectors.

This panel will examine how Middle East airlines, airports and tourism authorities are responding to near-term disruption while protecting the long-term strengths that have underpinned the region’s growth: geographic advantage, world-class infrastructure, strong hub connectivity and deep airline-tourism partnerships. Panellists will discuss how networks are being adapted, how destinations are working to rebuild confidence, and how airports and carriers can maintain connectivity amid operational uncertainty.

The discussion will also explore whether the region’s hub-based model is being reshaped by current pressures, where new opportunities are emerging, and what strategies will be needed to support a more resilient and sustainable aviation and tourism ecosystem.

Fireside Chat: What’s Next for British Airways?

Neil Chernoff, Chief Planning and Strategy Officer, British Airways

British Airways (BA) enjoyed a record financial and operational performance in 2025 and is planning a significant long-haul expansion planned for the winter 2026-27 season. The airline is adding new destinations including Melbourne and Colombo, increasing frequencies across key leisure and business markets, and investing in customer experience, digital connectivity and fleet renewal as part of its wider transformation programme.

In this fireside chat, Chief Planning and Strategy Officer Neil Chernoff will discuss how the airline is shaping its network for the next phase of growth. The conversation will explore BA’s approach to long-haul expansion, the role of Heathrow and Gatwick within its strategy, how the carrier is responding to shifting demand patterns and geopolitical disruption, and where future opportunities lie across premium, leisure and connecting markets.

The session will also examine how BA is balancing growth with operational resilience, sustainability commitments, aircraft availability and changing customer expectations as it works to build a more modern, reliable and competitive airline.

New Aircraft, New Networks: How Technology Is Reshaping Airline Business Models

Airline business models are being reshaped by a more complex operating environment in 2026. Demand remains resilient, but higher fuel prices, aircraft delivery delays, supply chain constraints and pressure on margins are forcing carriers to think differently about how they deploy capacity, open routes and serve changing customer demand.

This panel will explore how new-generation aircraft, digital tools and evolving network strategies are changing the competitive landscape for both low-cost and full-service carriers. Long-range narrowbody aircraft such as the Airbus A321XLR are creating opportunities to serve thinner long-haul markets, test new point-to-point routes and improve aircraft utilization, while fleet constraints are also pushing airlines to be more selective about where and how they grow.

Panellists will discuss how technology is influencing route development, revenue management, customer segmentation and operational efficiency. The session will also examine whether the traditional lines between LCCs, hybrid carriers and full-service airlines are becoming less clear as airlines adapt their models to higher costs, constrained capacity and new market opportunities.

What Role Will AI Play in the Future of Route Development?

    Dave Stroud, Managing Director, ASM

Artificial intelligence is moving quickly from concept to practical application across aviation, with growing implications for how airlines, airports and destinations analyse markets, forecast demand and make network decisions.

This session will explore how AI-driven tools, predictive analytics and richer data sources are changing route development and network planning. Panellists will discuss where AI can improve decision-making, from identifying unserved demand and testing route opportunities to supporting revenue, operations and destination marketing strategies.

The discussion will also examine the limits and risks of AI adoption, including data quality, transparency, integration with existing systems and the changing skills required across commercial aviation teams. Rather than replacing industry expertise, the session will consider how AI can support better, faster and more informed decisions in an increasingly complex market.

Sustainability Under Pressure: Keeping Net Zero on Track

Aviation’s commitment to net zero remains firmly on the agenda, but the path to decarbonisation remains challenging. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply remains limited, fuel and compliance costs are rising, aircraft delivery delays are slowing fleet renewal, and policy approaches are diverging across major markets.

This panel will examine how airlines, airports, fuel producers and policymakers can keep sustainability goals on track while balancing economic reality. Discussion will focus on the scale-up of sustainable aviation fuel, the impact of mandates and emissions trading schemes such as ReFuelEU and the EU Emissions Trading System, the role of CORSIA, and the operational efficiencies that can reduce emissions in the near term.

Panellists will also explore how different regions are approaching aviation decarbonisation, whether current policies are creating the right incentives for investment, and how the industry can maintain public and political support for climate action at a time of higher costs, supply constraints and geopolitical uncertainty.
