Traffic Report for February: Moderate Growth in Traffic at Airports in the Capital Region

The growth in air traffic in Berlin and Brandenburg is continuing. In February a total of 1,673,332 passengers used Tegel and Schoenefeld Airports – 5.4 per cent more than in the same month of the previous year. Over the first two months of 2012, the airports handled 3,295,749 passengers in aggregate, which represents an increase of 5.1 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year.

At Tegel Airport, 1,193,669 passengers were recorded in February, which is 6.4 per cent more than in the same month of the previous year. A total of 2,336,553 passengers was recorded in January and February (in aggregate +7.2 per cent).

At Schoenefeld Airport, 479,663 passengers were recorded last month. This means that – after taking the base effect into account – air traffic at Schoenefeld Airport at the beginning of 2012 has developed positively for the first time since the introduction of the air traffic tax. This figure corresponds to an increase of 3.0 per cent compared to February 2011. Over the first two months of the year, 959,169 passengers in aggregate were recorded at Schoenefeld Airport (+0.3 per cent).

The total number of flight movements in February amounted to 17,197 take-offs and landings, which represents a decrease of 2.7 per cent compared to the same month of the previous year. There was a total of 34,306 flight movements in January and February combined, which represents a decrease of 3.3 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year. With passenger figures at the same time increasing, this is evidence of the use of larger aircraft and of better capacity utilisation.

The amount of air freight carried increased during February by 6.5 per cent to 2,566 tonnes. This growth was primarily due to new long-haul routes (Abu Dhabi and New York) and increased flight frequencies (Miami) as well as the use of larger aircraft (Ulan Bator).

The monthly values are based on preliminary figures.
