Avinor starts preliminary project for development of Trondheim Airport

Avinor is now starting a preliminary project for the further development of Trondheim Airport, Værnes. The work will provide an updated decision-making basis for how the airport can be further developed in a holistic and future-oriented manner.
The project is in an early phase. A possible decision on development will only be considered by Avinor's board of directors in 2028, after concept and sketch work has been completed and the preliminary design has been completed.
“Trondheim Airport is one of our largest airports, and we need to plan long-term to ensure that it can meet future needs. The preliminary project will give us a solid basis for making good decisions about further development,” says Thorgeir Landevaag, Executive Vice President of the Major Airports Division at Avinor.
Avinor plans to announce tenders for the implementation of the pilot project during the autumn.
A new step in the development of Værnes
The development of Værnes has taken place in stages over several decades, with both developments and studies since the 1990s. At the same time, changing framework conditions, including economic uncertainty and the pandemic, have affected the progress of previous plans.
– Værnes has undergone significant development, and we now see the need to consider how we should take the airport forward. This preliminary project is an important step in ensuring good and comprehensive development of the airport in the years to come, says Marit Helene Stigen, Airport Director at Trondheim Airport.
The purpose of the pilot project is, among other things, to assess how capacity, functionality and land use can be developed in line with future needs, and to facilitate an airport that meets the requirements for future operations and aviation.
– This is about planning for the Værnes of the future, so that we can offer good solutions for passengers, airlines and society in the years to come, says Landevaag.
The preliminary project has an estimated duration of approximately one year.
