Værnes expects high summer traffic – busy Saturdays stand out

Trondheim Airport, Værnes is entering the summer period with high traffic and good pressure throughout the season. Capacity on domestic routes has increased by about 5 percent compared to last year, while the traffic pattern is changing on weekends.
– This will be a summer with steady and good traffic, but also with clear differences between the days, says airport director Marit Helene Stigen.
Among the busiest days during the period are:
- June 18: 13,327 travelers
- June 19: 13,295 travelers
- June 21: 13,198 travelers
- June 15: 13,039 travelers
At the same time, Saturdays stand out with a different traffic pattern than the rest of the week.
– On Saturdays, there are periods when international traffic is higher than domestic traffic, both on departure and arrival. Then we get many travelers gathered in the international area at the same time, says Stigen.
The travel pattern shows a clear combination of domestic travel and popular international routes. The largest traffic flows are to:
- Copenhagen and Amsterdam
- Oslo and Bergen
- Alicante, Malaga and Split
- London and Gdansk
- Helsinki and Frankfurt/Munich
In addition, there is significant charter traffic to, among others, Chania, Rhodes, Palma and Antalya, especially on weekends.
– We are well prepared and are adapting staffing and operations to the days with the highest pressure. At the same time, we always recommend that travelers arrive well in advance, especially on days with a lot of international traffic, says Stigen.
In the slightly longer term, Stigen raises the need to see traffic developments in a broader perspective:
– If we are to exploit the potential of this traffic, we depend on good coordination in the tourism industry to strengthen Trøndelag as a destination. We also look forward to the start of the preliminary project for further development and expansion of the airport, says Stigen.
Good advice for a smooth journey from Værnes:
- Arrive well in advance – preferably 1.5–2 hours before departure.
- Check in digitally before you arrive
- Have your boarding pass and ID ready
- Pack your hand luggage correctly
