It's taking off at Flesland – new direct route to Vienna opened

Today, Austrian Airlines opened a new direct route between Bergen Airport and Vienna. The route gives Western Norway a new connection to Central Europe, while also strengthening access to an attractive network of further connections. There was a celebration with a water bridge, balloons, speeches and a ribbon-cutting when the plane landed for the very first time at Bergen Airport, and for the passengers who were leaving on the first flight to Vienna.
– It is a great pleasure to welcome Austrian Airlines to Bergen. With three weekly departures from June 1, we are connecting two strong destinations and opening up new opportunities for tourism, business and cooperation between Norway and Austria. This is more than a new route – it is an important step in strengthening the connection between Western Norway and Europe, says Airport Director at Bergen Airport, Helge Eidsnes.
– The fact that Austrian Airlines is now opening a direct route between Vienna and Bergen shows that Western Norway is attracting interest in more and more markets. We experienced strong growth from Austria last year, and with a direct connection it will be even easier for new guests to experience both the spectacular nature and the vibrant local communities that make Western Norway unique. This is good news for the entire tourism industry in Western Norway, says Stein Ove Rolland, CEO of Fjord Norge.

The German-speaking region is already among the most important markets for Western Norway, and the new route from Vienna will strengthen both direct traffic and access further into Europe via Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa Group's networks.
– For us, it is important to develop a broad and relevant route offering abroad. This connects Western Norway even more closely to the rest of the world, while at the same time giving travelers easier access to both Vienna and the many further connections in Austrian Airlines' network. Austrian Airlines flies to over 100 destinations in Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East, with its main base at Vienna International Airport. The network is particularly strong in Central and Eastern Europe.
Bergen Airport has experienced strong growth in international traffic in recent years, driven by increased demand from both business and tourism. New routes to central European cities are an important contribution to this development, and strengthen Bergen's role as both a regional hub and international gateway.
