Two ancient civilizations connected - from Athens to Cairo and to Alexandria, with Air Cairo

Air Cairo a new airline for Athens, serving Cairo 5 times weekly and Alexandria 2 times weekly

On the 24th of July, Athens International Airport welcomed its newest operating airline, Air Cairo, offering direct services to Cairo and Alexandria. Cairo is served 5 times weekly, with Embraer E190 and Airbus A320 equipment, while Alexandria is served 2 times weekly with an Airbus A320 equipment. On the Cairo route, Air Cairo will supplement Aegean and Egypt Air services, while it will supplement Aegean services on the Alexandria route.

The new routes are expected to meet the growing demand for travel between Egypt and Greece, further enhance tourism and business traffic, and create new opportunities for bilateral, economic and tourism cooperation. This new development is strengthening the air links between the two countries and underlines the longstanding historical, cultural, tourism  and economic ties. Air Cairo is planning to further enhance their Athenian  offering, by adding routes to premium tourism destinations in the Red Sea,  namely Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh.

Egypt is an highly important market for Athens, in the TOP20 International markets in terms of direct traffic. It reached a record year in 2025 with almost 400 thousand round-trip PAX, recording a spectacular growth of 20% to 2024. In the first half of 2026, demand for Egypt is increasing further with a fascinating growth of 27% vs. Jan-Jun 2025.

Egypt is a very popular destination for Greeks, too, ranking 3rd in the non-European markets in 2025 for Greeks traveling Internationally. In addition to the direct traffic, Athens is also serving as a connecting point for travelers wishing  to connect from Europe and the wider region to Egypt and beyond.

Athens International Airport is committed in supporting Air Cairo’s significant development in Athens and we wish our airline partner every success, eagerly looking forward to a long and mutually rewarding collaboration.
