The summer trip is underway.

Friday, June 19 marks the start of this year's summer outing. Almost six million travelers are expected to pass through Oslo Airport in the coming weeks, and on the busiest days, close to 100,000 passengers will travel via the country's main airport.
– Summer is the big travel season of the year and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone who is going on holiday. We have been preparing for several months, and are ready for some exciting and hectic weeks ahead, says Thorgeir Landevaag, Airport Director at Oslo Airport.
A total of 5.97 million travelers are expected through Oslo Airport in the period from June 19 to August 24. More than 90,000 travelers are expected for 31 days, and on eight of the days the forecast is over 95,000.
– There will be consistently high pressure throughout the summer. It is important to allow enough time both to and at the airport, and not let yourself be stressed by the fact that there are many people at the airport. A queue does not necessarily mean a long wait, says Landevaag.
The busiest days of the summer
The busiest days at Oslo Airport are expected to be Sundays in July. Sunday, July 12, is forecast to peak with 97,451 travelers, followed by Sunday, July 19, with 97,040 travelers, and Sunday, July 26, with 96,224 travelers.
Sunday, July 5, Sunday, August 23, and Sunday, June 28 will also be among the busiest days of the summer.
– We see that the biggest peaks often come around weekends, and especially on Sundays. At the same time, summer traffic is high over a long period, so it's a good idea to be well prepared no matter what day you're traveling, says Landevaag.
Spain at the top of the travel charts
Spain is also this year the most popular country to travel to from Norwegian airports, followed by Denmark and Germany. Alicante is the most popular sun and swimming destination, while Gdansk has climbed up the list.
– We see that Norwegians still want both city breaks and sun and beach destinations. At the same time, it is clear that more people are choosing new European travel destinations than before, says Landevaag.
The destination countries that have seen the greatest growth so far this year are Poland, the United Kingdom and Italy. At the same time, capacity in countries such as the United States, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates has decreased compared to last year.
– It is not inconceivable that the international situation is affecting travel habits. Traffic to the Middle East has fallen, and growth in Asia has slowed down after a strong start to the year. This means that we are seeing growth to several European destinations, says Landevaag.
The ten most popular countries to travel to this summer are:
-
Spain – 661,402 travelers
-
Denmark – 607,315 travelers
-
Germany – 454,310 travelers
-
United Kingdom – 445,030 travelers
-
Netherlands – 438,259 travelers
-
Poland – 427,777 travelers
-
Greece – 380,825 travelers
-
Sweden – 308,499 travelers
-
France – 301,868 travelers
-
Italy – 244,603 travelers
More foreign tourists choose Norway
While many Norwegians are going on holiday, more and more international visitors are also coming to Norway. Almost half of the international traffic at Norwegian airports comes from foreign travellers, the highest level since 2019.
– Norway remains an attractive destination for international tourists, especially in the summer. We are seeing particular growth among travelers from the UK, Poland, the USA, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy, says Landevaag.
Plan your trip well in advance
This summer, work is underway on the Gardermobanen line, which for some will mean longer travel times and buses instead of trains. Landevaag therefore encourages travelers to plan their transportation to the airport extra carefully and allow plenty of time.
– The most important advice of all is to follow the check-in times from the airline. At the same time, it is wise to allow a little extra time if you are going through passport control or traveling on the busiest days, says Landevaag.
He also advises travelers to breathe with their stomachs if there is a queue.
“Many people get worried when they see a queue at security, but it’s the waiting time that matters. When the flow is good, the queue moves quickly, often faster than it seems. If you follow the airline’s recommended arrival time, you should have a good margin even on the busiest summer days,” he continues.
Remember this before departure
Here are some important tips and advice to make the start of your holiday as good as possible:
-
Check how much luggage is included in your ticket before you travel.
-
Check in digitally in advance if your trip allows it to save time when you arrive at the airport.
-
Lithium batteries and power banks should always be kept in your carry-on luggage. These can ignite spontaneously and are strictly prohibited in checked baggage.
-
Carry important documents, medications, and perhaps an extra change of clothes in your hand luggage. This is especially important if you are making a stopover.
-
Liquids over 100 milliliters cannot be taken through security.
-
Prepare yourself before you get to security. Have liquids and electronics readily available, empty your pockets, and get ready before you reach the belt.
-
Remember the ETA if you are traveling to or via the United Kingdom.
-
Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' travel advice before departure.
– A little planning in advance gives a much better start to your vacation. Relax, allow plenty of time and enjoy your trip. We look forward to welcoming you, concludes Landevaag.
