Portugal is the 15th most competitive tourist destination in the World

The World Economic Forum released this afternoon the 'Global Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index, in which Portugal recovers 15 in the world ranking of the most competitive destinations, position it held in 2008. In the document the country exceeds destinations such as Sweden, the New Zealand, Iceland, Finland, Belgium and Ireland.
The Portuguese market still appears highlighted in the rankings at European level to the figure for the first time, the 'top' ten of the most competitive destinations in what is the main tourist area of the world. Portugal can well exceed the direct competitors Greece, Croatia and Turkey.
The liberalization of the sector, the reduction of taxes and local costs and the change in destination promotion strategy - to focus on the digital capture of air routes and strengthening the relationship with the international press - are the arguments that helped justify this performance.
Speaking to the Economic, Secretary of State for Tourism, Adolfo Mesquita Nunes, emphasizes that the "rise of five places after six years in constant fall, is a good sign or encouragement that we are on the right track." Mosque Nunes says that this sign "must be read and analyzed together with the growth we have had in terms of overnight stays, the income and the tourism revenues."
The governor has no doubt that this ranking "shows that Portugal competes geographically with some of the world's most competitive countries, particularly with the most competitive, Spain." The growth percentage level "far superior, which Portugal has had face Spain in overnight stays and income, gains a special importance and highlights the excellent work of the private sector."Portugal still occupies the tenth place as safest tourist destination in the world.
