In a ceremony that took place in Rome, the ACI Europe awarded the prizes corresponding to the 18th edition of the Best Airport Awards which recognize excellency and the extraordinary achievements across airport activities. This edition of the awards dedicated a special attention on Covid-19 recovery and sustainability with a focus on the ways airports are responding to the crisis, but also innovating and inspiring during Covid-19 pandemic, while focusing on the airport industry’s sustainable goals.

Porto Airport, the best airport in the 10-25 million passenger category, considering the number of passengers in 2019, was praised for its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and the increasing focus on sustainability related achievements which engaged both the airport and its stakeholders. The airport was: “Very committed to the local community and the region” and “has implemented initiatives such as rainwater collection, the reduction in water footprint and organic waste collection to a nearby waste park.”, highlights ACI Europe's press release.

During the pandemic crisis Porto Airport maintained its operation and was highlighted for the effective implementation of health measures and passenger management, Voice of Customer and Hygiene Awards, accredited by CLEAN & SAFE of Turismo de Portugal and certified by Bureau Veritas. In parallel, the marketing teams remained committed to the resumption of activity, working on route development which, together with the attractiveness of the northern region, has enabled very positive results to be achieved in terms of traffic recovery and connectivity.

At this moment, Porto Airport has already surpassed the connectivity level verified in Summer 2019 and 100 scheduled routes are now available.
