International Connectivity Expands with Five New Services in June 2025

KL International Airport (KLIA) and Penang International Airport have expanded international air connectivity with the addition of five new services in June 2025, reinforcing efforts to position Malaysia as a leading global aviation hub.

Two of the new services are operated by new airline partners including Cambodia Airways (KR) which began twice-weekly flights between Phnom Penh and Penang International Airport (PEN), enhancing cross-border connectivity. Meanwhile, Juneyao Air (HO) launched four weekly flights from Shanghai to KLIA, further strengthening Malaysia’s links with East Asia and expanding travel options for passengers from China and beyond.

In addition to the new airline entries, three new routes were launched by existing airline partners, reflecting sustained confidence in the Malaysian aviation market. Batik Air Malaysia (OD) commenced a twice-weekly service between KLIA and Dili, Timor-Leste; AirAsia Cambodia (KT) introduced a thrice-weekly route connecting KLIA to Sihanoukville; and AirAsia (AK) began operating four weekly flights between KLIA and Darwin, Australia.

In June 2025, Malaysia Airports, including its asset in Türkiye, Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (ISG) handled a total of 12.7 million passenger movements. Of this, local airports in Malaysia contributed 68%, or 8.5 million passenger movements, comprising 4.2 million international and 4.3 million domestic travellers. For ISG, it recorded 4.1 million total passenger movements, comprising 2.2 million international and 1.9 million domestic in June.

On the local front, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) registered a notable month-on-month growth in June, with total passenger movements increasing by 9%, from 138,000 in May to 151,000. International passenger movements rose by over 10%, from 36,000 to 40,000 while domestic movements increased by nearly 9%, from 102,000 to 111,000. This upward trend was supported by strong average load factors of 70% and above on key regional routes operated by Firefly Airlines (FY) to Seletar (XSP), Scoot (TR) to Changi (SIN), and TransNusa Airlines (8B) to Jakarta (CGK). The increase in domestic travel was also driven by the Harvest Festival in Sabah and Sarawak, and Hari Raya Haji (Eid al-Adha) that coincided with the school holidays, contributing to higher passenger volumes across the network.
