Delta triples capacity from Portugal with two new routes and year-round service

Airline links Lisbon to Atlanta, the world’s largest airport hub and connects Azores to New York-JFK

LISBON / PONTA DELGADA, May 23, 2018 – Delta Air Lines [NYSE:DAL] is boosting services to the U.S. from Portugal this year. On May 25, the airline will add a new daily nonstop flight between Lisbon and its Atlanta hub – the world’s largest airport – while effective May 26, it will start five weekly nonstop services from Ponta Delgada to New York-JFK. The new flights complement the airline’s daily existing flight between Lisbon and New York-JFK, which launched in summer 2017 and resumed on May 3 as a year-round service.

Delta’s new routes and the year-round Lisbon to New York-JFK service represent a capacity increase of 216 percent from Portugal in 2018 versus last year. In total, the airline will offer more than 7,400 seats each week between Portugal, the Azores and the U.S. throughout the peak summer months.

Commenting on the growth of service, Corneel Koster, Delta’s senior vice president EMEAI said: “Around 43,000 passengers flew Delta between New York and Lisbon in 2017, a strong performance indicating high demand for a year-round flight. Meanwhile, a second route from Lisbon to Atlanta and one from the beautiful Azores archipelago means there’s never been so much choice to the United States.”

Delta is the only airline to offer nonstop services between Lisbon and Atlanta as well as the Azores and New York.

Koster added: “Portugal and the Azores are growing in popularity with U.S. tourists, as evidenced by a 30 percent jump in American visitor numbers to Portugal last year. Delta’s significant growth in the market will support this upward trend and benefit the local economy through increased tourism.”

The extra services from Lisbon and the new route from Ponta Delgada offer numerous benefits to customers traveling to the United States and beyond. Highlights include:
