About the Official Carrier

Georgian Airways was first established in September 1993 as the air company 'Airzena'. Initially, Airzena operated charter flights to United Arab Emirates, Italy, China, Egypt, India, Syria, as well as the regular flights to Vienna. In that economically and politically complicated period, due to the correctly selected strategy, the air company succeeded to achieve recognition and retain its share in the aviation market of Georgia.

In 1999 Airzena became a flag air carrier of Georgia and in 2004 the company changed its name to ‘Georgian Airways’. However, Airzena has remained as a short brand name and is still widely used.

In the first half of 2000 the air company's management made a decision to modernize the fleet and leased two BOEING737-500 aircraft from a German company 'Hapag-Lloyd'. This was the first case when the Georgian air company started operating the up-to-date Western technology and since that time, the air company has been permanently developing and modernizing its fleet.

Georgian Airways is a fully privately owned company with the fleet of modern BOEING737 and CRJ aircraft. The company's base airport is Tbilisi International Airport, and the companies General Director is Mr. Iase Zautashvili.

In 2010 Georgian Airways became a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Before acceding to IATA, the air company underwent IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), as all IATA Member Airlines are committed to being audited and meet IOSA standards. The IOSA Program is an internationally recognised and accepted evaluation system designed to assess the operational management and control systems of an airline.

Safety of the air company operations remains the highest priority – compliance with IOSA standards and IATA/ICAO recommended practices help the air company to deliver operational safety in all key areas. From2008, Georgian Airways has successfully passed three IOSA audits. The last certification was effectuated in October 2012 and is valid till March 2015.
